SUMMER
HERITAGE CAMP
The
first Heritage Camp was organized in 1990 at Hemlock Overlook
Park, Clifton, Virginia with over 20 campers. Since then,
the Heritage Camp has been organized at its current location,
Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland with about 120 campers participated
annually.
Heritage
Camp is a two-day weekend summer camp for young Vietnamese-American
interested in learning about the Vietnamese culture through
interaction and team work. During this camp, activities are
devised to help youths develop friendship, deepen their knowledge
of Vietnamese heritage, and work together to resolve cultural
gaps within families and in society. Some of the main activities
are culture and history classes, musical and talent performances,
peer discussion, games and camp fire.
Past
campers have been mostly students and alumni from area high
schools, colleges and universities in Virginia, Maryland,
Washington DC, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Massachusettes,
Connecticut, and neighboring states.
The
Heritage Camp is administered by VCSMW, with voluntary help
from students of local colleges such as University of Virginia,
University of Maryland, Virginia Tech, College of William
& Mary, Catholic University, George Mason University,
Virginia Commonwealth University, Georgetown University, Old
Dominion University, MIT, Carnegie-Mellon, Cornell, Universiy
of Pittsburgh, and many others.
